What it’s all about

This hands-on program guides students through script analysis, research, and costume design, including creating collage boards and sketching unique designs. They'll learn sewing fundamentals and understand proper costume fit, gaining a comprehensive introduction to design and production skills for theater, film, and TV. Each workshop runs around 35 minutes, and includes exercises to further their understanding. It's the perfect workshop for teaching your drama class to craft stunning, story-driven costumes.

Workshop #1

Developing the Characters. Begin your journey into the foundational steps of costume design. You'll discover how to analyze scripts for character-driven narratives, collaborate seamlessly with directors, conduct in-depth research, and create compelling mood boards that truly bring characters to life.

Workshop #2

Realizing the Characters. Learn to create stunning costumes from concept to completion. You'll sketch unique designs, source materials creatively (including smart shopping and repurposing), and master basic sewing and fitting techniques.

Workshop #3

Finalizing designs and stage magic! Master the final steps of costume preparation, integrating textile artistry and quick-change techniques. You'll also learn about the essential crew members involved in costume design, all to deliver a cohesive and visually stunning experience.

Led by Charlotte-based Elisa Richards, a seasoned costume designer, this workshop draws from her wealth of experience. Elisa earned her B.F.A. in Costume Design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and began her career with opera companies like The Metropolitan Opera and The Santa Fe Opera, where she served as a costume shopper. While living in New York, she designed numerous stage productions and worked as a dresser for Broadway’s Mary Poppins. Now in the film industry, she's an assistant costume designer on projects such as Creed III, Home Team, Mile 22, and The Walking Dead. She also excels as a made-to-order coordinator, specifically overseeing custom builds for shows like Creed II, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Legacies. Her extensive background will significantly enhance your lessons, offering expert insights for your classroom.
